Physically Based Simulation of Explosions. (May 2005) Matthew Douglas Roach, B.S.; B.S., Southern Methodist University Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Donald House This thesis describes a method for using physically based techniques to model an explosion and the resulting side effects. Explosions are some of the most visually exciting phenomena known to humankind and have become nearly ubiquitous in action films. A realistic computer simulation of this powerful event would be cheaper, quicker, and much less complicated than safely creating the real thing. The immense energy released by a detonation creates a discontinuous localized increase in pressure and temperature. Physicists and engineers have shown that the dissipation of this concentration of energy, which creates all the visible effects, adheres closely to the compressible Navier-Stokes equation. This program models the most noticeable of these results. In order to simulate the pressure and temperature changes in the environment, a three dimensional grid is placed throughout the area around the detonation and a discretized version of the Navier-Stokes equation is applied to the resulting voxels. Objects in the scene are represented as rigid bodies that are animated by the forces created by varying pressure on their hulls. Fireballs, perhaps the most awe-inspiring side effects of an explosion, are simulated using massless particles that flow out from the center of the blast and follow the currents created by the dissipating pressure. The results can then be brought into Maya for evaluation and tweaking.

Animating Exploding Objects

The paper explores the physically-based modeling of a blast wave impact on surrounding objects. We propose a connected voxel representation of objects to model explosions that result in realistic solid debris, rather than flat polygons. The paper also presents improved fracture algorithms capable of accounting for the damage of multiple explosions. The important implementation issues and the re...

Animering av eksplosjoner i sanntid

Explosions play an important role in many games. Yet, as explosions are sudden and highly turbulent, animating visually pleasing and dynamic realtime explosions is a very complex task. We present a method for animating explosions completely on the graphics processing unit (GPU). The simulation allows for arbitrary internal boundaries and is governed by a combustion process, a Stable Fluids solv...

Visually believable explosions in real time

The paper presents a real-time physically based simulation of object damage and motion due to a blast wave impact. An improved connected voxel model is used to represent the objects. The paper also explores auxiliary visual effects caused by the blast wave that increase visual believability without being rigorously physically based or computation-

River Flow Simulation Using SWAT Physically Based Model in Barandouzchay of Urmia Lake River Basin

Nowadays, there are too many models in the world for simulation of hydrological processes, such as the SWAT physically based model. The SWAT model is a continuous and physically based hydrologic model that is the smallest unit in this model is Hydrologic Response Unit, and all hydrological processes are simulated in each of these units. This model can simulate runoff, sedimentation, erosion and...

Graph-Based Fracture Models for Rigid Body Explosions

Explosions are one of the most powerful and devastating natural phenomena. The pressure front from the blast wave of an explosion can cause fracture of objects in its vicinity and create flying debris. In this thesis, I outline a previously proposed explosion model. An explosion is treated as a fluid with its behaviour governed by the Navier-Stokes equations and the gaseous products modeled usi...
